Freshwater pearls are cultured in mollusks, rather than oysters, in freshwater lakes and rivers throughout China and Japan. These special pearls appear in a wide variety of shapes and natural colors, and they are usually less expensive than saltwater pearls, which makes them very popular with both jewelry designers and pearl lovers. Because freshwater pearls have a solid nacre, they are also quite durable, and should resist chipping, wear, and degeneration. In size, shape and color, they exist in an amazing variety of forms
Surface Markings
A pearl free of any surface blemishes is the most valuable but is very rare. Just as our own skin is rarely completely free of little imperfections, so it is with pearls. Most gem quality pearls have small blemishes such as spots or bumps that are not easily noticed but will nevertheless lower their value. Low quality pearls will have larger flaws or even small cracks. All other things being equal, the cleaner the surface, the more valuable the pearl.
Nacre Thickness
Nacre thickness is very important to the long term quality and luster of your pearls. The thickness of the nacre determines how the light reflects off of the pearl and also determines how easy it will chip or break. A cultured freshwater pearl with very thin nacre may chip and break very easily and its lifespan will be shorter than a pearl with thicker nacre. To have a lustrous pearl, the nacre must be thick. Any pearl that exhibits a rich luster is one that has thick nacre.
Matching
Matching refers to pairs or strands, and addresses uniformity of color, luster, shape, spotting and graduation. The more uniform and aesthetically pleasing two or more pearls look together the more time was spent matching the pearls. This time to match pearls is reflected in the cost. If colors are intentionally mixed, it refers to the attractiveness of the combination. Each pearl in a strand has been selected to be placed between its neighbors on each side, and there should be no noticeable difference between pearls that are side-by-side.No two pearls are the same, which makes this step of the process so important to the overall look of a pearl strand. It takes a very refined eye and a lot of time to properly match up one of a kind pearls to make strand. Often a skilled worker must sort through thousands of pearls in order to find enough that match perfectly and will make up a uniformly beautiful pearl jewelry strand.

Pearl Jewelry is considered to be unique and gives a refined look to anyone. For centuries, pearl jewelry has captivated people with its rare radiance.
Pearls are very resilient and their quality is durable, but proper care is necessary to keep them lustrous and beautiful.
Daily Care
Being organic in nature, pearl can show signs of deterioration overtime. Certain ingredients such as hairspray, perfume or other cosmetics that contain chemical substances, or acidity of the body coming from perspiration and body oils, can dull the luster of pearls. Should these substances come into contact, just wipe your pearls with a soft damp cloth. If make-up and perfume accumulate, a very mild soap may be used.
To minimize exposure to chemicals, pearls should be the last thing you put on after dressing on the morning, after you have applied perfume, lotion and other substances on your body, and the first accessory you take off at night when undressing. Remove your pearls before performing strenuous exercise or work that could result in damaged jewelry.
The best advice is to wear your pearls often because the air and the moisture of your body keep the pearls hydrated and prevent them from deterioration. Moreover, the symbiosis between the pearls and the woman adorning them brings out their natural glow and in turn gives the wearer a radiant look.
Storage
Keep pearl jewelry, like pearl necklace or bracelet earrings etc. in separate containers from other jewelry pieces so that harder stones like diamonds do not scratch the pearl’s surface. When traveling you should isolate your pearl jewelry in a soft jewelry bag, or wrap your jewelry in linen handkerchief to protect it from scratches and damage
Do not keep your pearls jewelry in plastic containers or in the vault for long period of time because pearls need moisture. If the environment is too dry, the pearls may crack. So if you need to leave them in the vault, be sure to leave a small glass of water inside to provide moisture.

Pearl is one of the most valuable gemstones available on earth. It is produced inside a living shelled mollusk’s soft tissue. Pearl Jewelry is considered to be unique and gives a refined look to anyone. For centuries, Pearl and pearl jewelry has captivated people with its rare radiance. For those born on June, Pearl and Alexandrite are the birthstones.
The great ancient civilizations all shared a love for the alluring glow of pearls. Each attached different meaning and significance to the wish pearl, but one thing remained the same; the pearl was a symbol of the bounty and wealth of their culture and land. From Ancient Egypt to Ancient Rome, pearls were desired as a symbol of status and wealth. The ancient civilizations of China and Greece also prized the pearl from their earliest history. Even the Indian and Aztec civilizations of the Americas valued the pearl as a special part of their being. From the 4 corners of the Earth, our ancestors agreed that pearls were truly something special. Its beauty is truly universal.
The Akoya is the original cultured pearl. It is the one that Mikimoto had a hand in developing and the first cultured pearls that were commercially successful. The name Akoya comes from the name of the oyster which is found predominately in Japan and China. Its scientific name is Pinctata fucata. The Akoya oyster is rather small when compared to the oysters used in cultivating SouthSea and Tahitian pearls. It produces pearls that range in size from 2MM to 9MM.
Akoya pearls are available in various shapes and eight basic shapes in which pearls are found are round, semi-round, button, and drop, pear, oval, baroque and circled. Semi-round pearls and button pearls are used for necklaces. Drop and pear shaped pearls are used in making earrings, pendants and centre piece of a pearl necklace. Baroque pearls come in interesting and irregular shapes. They are used in necklaces.
Akoya pearl oysters are now grown in hatcheries to insure a constant supply. The oysters are fed a grown microscopic organism called plankton. A few months into their growth period the oysters are moved from the hatcheries to the cultivating areas where they are monitored and fed until they are strong enough to withstand the nucleating operation. In the operation, a technician inserts a shell bead nucleus together with a piece of mantle from a donor oyster into the mollusk’s gonad area. This piece of mantle forms a sac over the nucleus and the sac secretes nacre over the bead nucleus. This secretion will eventually lead to a cultured pearl.
